Is white skin really fair skin?
Something as basic as the color of our skin has shaped our lives, opened doors, put us at the head of the line.
Granted us privileges we don’t even realize.
We don’t experience the daily disadvantages - the looks, the fear, the hassles - that thrive in the unspoken world of white entitlement.
And that’s unfair.

A Nobel Winner Writes Of Peace In 'The Golden Cage' : NPR

atlampa:

Fromt this story:

“Five years ago on All Things Considered, [Shirin] Ebadi herself spoke about why she didn’t choose to leave Iran. She said, ‘I’m Iranian, I belong to Iran, and I work for Iran so I have to be in Iran.’ Since then, she has left the country. Here, she explains why. ‘One day prior to the elections of 2009, I left Iran to participate in a seminar in Spain,” she says. “Four days later when I had concluded my seminar, Iran was not the country I had left. People had taken to the streets; many were arrested, many were killed. So my colleagues recommended that instead of going back to Iran I should go to the United Nations and tell the world what was going on in Iran. Working on human-rights issues has become almost impossible in Iran.’ “

We encourage all of our follows to listen to this—a great NPR piece on PeaceJam laureate Shirin Ebadi. Go Shirin!

cisrjmu:

Jody Williams received the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for her work banning landmines.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams will speak at Kennesaw State University on Thursday, Feb. 2, as part of the university’s Pathways to Peace Lecture Series.

Williams is the founding coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL). She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 in recognition of her efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty.

According to the ICBL website, the campaign is a global network in over 90 countries. Its mission is to free the world of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions and to help survivors lead fulfilling lives. The organization will celebrate its 20th anniversary in October of this year.

We love Jody! Anyone near Kennesaw State University should definitely go see this.
